A bill legalizing medical cannabis usage in Korea recently received the backing of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, making it much more likely for the legislation to pass through the country’s National Assembly.
The proposed law would allow sufferers of certain illnesses, diseases, and other conditions such as epilepsy and cancer to legally purchase the drug from government-approved cannabis distributors.
The bill, authored by Rep. Shin Chang-Hyun, already had a significant chance of passing considering Shin’s Democratic Party controls the most seats in the legislature.
If passed, Korea would become the second Asian country to approve marijuana for medical use. Thailand recently passed a bill paving the way for the use and sale of legal medical marijuana in the coming months.
