The two migrant workers convicted of killing a pair of British nationals in 2014 have lost an appeal against their death penalty sentencing reports Time.

Zaw Lin and Win Zaw Htun were convicted of killing 24 year old David Miller and 23 year old Hannah Witheridge while working on a resort in Koh Tao.

The case garnered international attention and global scrutiny from migrant rights activists and criminal defense attorneys in Thailand and around the world for apparent mishandling of evidence and tortured confessions.

Critics argued that the migrant workers might have been scapegoats.

Time reports, “Both of the men have denied any wrongdoing, claiming that police had tortured them into making a confession. Their lengthy trial was mired by allegations of coercion, a bungled investigation and questionable DNA evidence.”

Thailand last carried out the death penalty in 2009.
