The Kardashian family arrived in Thailand this week, to spend time at their holiday home in Phuket, Thailand.
Although there is no evidence that this is anything but a family holiday, the arrival of Chris Jenner, rumored to be a fan of cosmetic surgery, serves as a timely reminder that Thailand’s medical tourism industry is booming.
Medical tourism is one of Thailand’s biggest growing industries, thanks to the numerous internationally recognized hospitals and good marketing. Thailand’s medical facilities advertise Western-trained medical professionals, up-to-date medical technology, reduced costs and hospital rooms and rooms comparable to 5 star resorts.
However, patients and consumers should research carefully choosing a medical procedure in Thailand. Attorney Jiraporn Thongphong of Thailand law firm Chaninat & Leeds advises, “Medical malpractice in Thailand can and does occur. Although there is a legal system for victims with compensation for a failed medical procedure or treatment, the procedures are often confusing to foreign patients. There is a government medical board that oversees doctors and hospitals in Thailand. There is also a Court process for filing civil complaints and enforcing judgments.”
