Judge Suspended for Wearing Trump Hat

by Admin on September 13, 2017

According to the National Post, an Ontario judge was suspended for thirty days without pay for wearing a Trump hat in the courtroom.

Bernd Zabel, a judge on the Ontario Judicial Council, walked into his Hamilton courtroom the day after the election result with the ‘make America great again’ hat as a jibe to the other judges ‘because they all voted for Hillary’, he said.

Judges have a duty to remain impartial, and Zabel’s actions constituted judicial misconduct. As a result, he was formally reprimanded.

He could have lost his job entirely, if not for the support of his colleagues, who testified in person and in writing to praise his previous record and character.

The panel’s decision read, “absent the strong evidence of Justice Zabel’s long record of impeccable service as a fair and impartial judge, the result may well have been different.”
