A recently published editorial on The Diplomat brought to light the subtle changes in the US-Thailand relationship over the past few years that may inadvertently push Thailand into the arms of China, risking the loss of one of its longest standing allies in Asia.
Relations between the two nations started to dwindle after the military junta took over the Southeast Asian country in 2014. The US is withholding military aid from the country until a democratically elected government comes into power. In the meantime, China has filled the slot acquiring itself $1 Billion in the deal.
Thailand had also shown interest in joining the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) and with the U.S’ pull out, the two countries can form a bilateral trade agreement. The author urges the US to rekindle its relationship with Thailand before the latter becomes reliant on alternative regional partners.
