Hurricane Victims Who Abandon Dogs Face Prosecution

As families are fleeing Hurricane Irma, their dogs are being left behind. In response, authorities have announced that people who abandon their pets in the storm could face felony charges.

Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control reported rescuing around 40 dogs in just a few days, many of which were left tied up. Dianne Suave, director of the organization, announced that if they can identify the owners and gather enough evidence, they will press animal cruelty charges against them.

“These are things that are not unexpected during a situation like this,” she said, adding there are two pet-friendly shelters in Palm Beach County. “It’s always disappointing. Our goal is to keep pets and people together”.
