In an unprecedented move, Illinois just passed a law that requires all salon workers to train in domestic violence support reports WGN News.

The legislation was introduced as an amendment to the Barber, Cosmetology, Hair Braiding and Nail Technology Act of 1985 and comes into effect on January 1st 2017.

PBA Director of Charitable Programs Rachel Molepske said to Herald Whig, “The salon is a safe place to go. People tell their stylists things they don’t even tell their family or friends.”A similar program was established by Professional Beauty Association called Cut it Out.

Domestic violence is a major, mostly unregulated issue around the globe. According to reports, 11,766 women were killed by husbands or boyfriends in America between 2001 and 2012.

In Thailand, a 2012 survey by Thailand’s Mahidol University’s National Institute for Child and Family Development, showed that incidents of domestic violence against women increased by 30.8%. There was also a sharp rise in divorce rates from 10.8% in 2009 to 30% in 2012. Socio-economic issues are said to play a major role in the rising number of reported domestic abuse and divorce cases.
