According to the Samui Times, police on Koh Phangan worked with the military to crackdown on illegal hostels and nitrous oxide balloon business laws last week.
The campaign was launched in response to complaints from residents, who reported more than 150 hostels operating illegally on the island.

The first hostels to fall victim to the police were Cat in Space and Echo Beach Bar, which were both found to have been opened without permits.
This isn’t the only illegal activity reported at hostels on the island. There have been multiple reports of drug use, and one man was arrested while working at Echo Beach Bar for selling nitrous oxide.
Nitrous oxide is a depressant chemical typically used by dentists to anesthetize patients before surgery. The chemical is also used recreationally for its euphoric effects. Typically, it’s sold in balloons to be inhaled.
