Bangkok Shooter Blames Fiancee’s Mother

Tasaphol Haekla, 35, the man arrested for shooting dead his bride-to-be has claimed that he killed her and her mother when his future in-law tried to stop their wedding by increasing the sin sod (bride price) for her daughter, from 500,000 baht to 2 million baht.

The Bangkok Post reports that he made the claims during interrogation after police arrested him in the Cambodian tourist town of Siem Reap on Monday.

The murder suspect explained he had treated his fiancée well, by giving her money and funding her studies, but said her mother had told her to stop seeing him after he said he could not afford 2 million baht for her sin sod.

Under Thailand marriage law, the dowry system is known as the ‘Sin Sod’. Traditionally, the groom will be expected to pay a dowry or sin sod to the family, to compensate them for the loss of their daughter.
