High Profile US Law Firm Closes Myanmar Office

The US law firm, Herzfeld Rubin Meyer & Rose opened shop in 2013 when Myanmar had opened its doors to the West. On February 1st, they announced that they would be closing their office due to a myriad of reasons. The firm was well connected in Myanmar, having advisers to the former President and Aung San Suu Kyi.

The New York based law firm decided to withdraw its office from Yangon due to the financial constraints that the US has imposed over Myanmar in the past six years. Rose states that he has had little success bringing US investment into Myanmar. No American bank will trade or accept funds from Myanmar.

The domestic economic policies issued by the current government that promised two years ago for securing international investment have just been empty promises due to issues with corruption and the Rakhine State (http://www.thailawforum.com/blog/mou-myanmar).
