Gays Arrested In Nigeria Following Controversial New Law Whilst Surrogate Deal Close To Being Reached In Thailand

Since President Goodluck Jonathan signed a popular anti-gay bill earlier this month, hostility towards gays in Nigeria continues to escalate reports Voice of America.

About half of Nigerians are Muslim and half are Christian.  The two religions appear to have found common ground in support of a new law that criminalizes gay organizations and allows those in a gay marriage to be sentenced to up to 14 years in prison.

Western governments and human rights organizations have slammed the law, arguing that it violates rights offered by Nigerian and international law.

We reported yesterday that 65 families were protesting as there children who were born to surrogates in Thailand were not being allowed to leave Thailand due to issues with passports. However today news emerges that a solution is closed to being reach and that the Foreign Ministry have approved a draft agreement submitted by one of the Israeli couples involved to allow for the infant’s permanent removal from Thailand according to Harretz Daily Edition.

These two different stories are make for an interesting reading and demonstration of how different cultural attitudes toward gay persons are even now in 2014.

On the one hand certain Western societies are showing a trend to full equality towards gay individuals and couples, including child bearing rights. Simultaneously other societies are still much more regressive in their restriction on gay people’s rights. Equally, it also shows that whilst Nigeria is now arresting people for being gay, Israel is now welcoming gay couples as parents.

Whilst we are used to foreign fathers sometimes having issues under Thailand Paternity Law relating to their children,  this is demonstrative that same sex couples also face their own limitations under the law.

It’s ludicrous of countries that passes laws based on faith and religion.

I think it is very good to pass laws based on the religion and faith because both are the principal ways that life is based upon.
