A Frenchman who was arrested and sent to a hard-labor prison finished his month-long sentence last week and will be deported back to his home country.
Arthur Desclaux was arrested by Burmese authorities in February for flying his drone in the capital city of Naypyitaw without a license.
Authorities caught Desclaux who was visiting Myanmar as a tourist flying his drone over the parliament building.
Desclaux, who confessed his guilt in court, was still sentenced to one month of prison and hard labor, which the judge called a “light sentence”.
According to the court, Desclaux violated Myanmar’s import-export law which requires those who bring “banned goods”, including drones, into the country to get a proper license.
The maximum sentence for the violation is three years in prison.
According to Thailand lawyers, drone regulations across Southeast Asia are very obscure and, in many cases, tourists have their drones confiscated on arrival or are even arrested due to not knowing the laws before arriving.
