The Finnish Government will Allow both Females to be Recognized as Mothers in Same Sex Marriage

Under current Finnish law in regards to parent recognition, the partner in a same sex couple that did not give birth to the couple’s child has to apply for adoption to receive legal status as a parent. Citizens have complained that this process is slow, expensive and humiliating.

This is not the first citizen initiative law to be passed by the government. The first was same-sex marriage.

The new law under the Maternity Act will apply to same sex couples where one of the partners undergo fertility treatment to become pregnant. The parliament had voted 122 to 42, with the main opposition being Christian Democrats.
