Fighters Push for Safety Laws in Combat Sports

by Admin on September 22, 2017

Professional fighters in various combat sports are calling for safety regulations to be tightened.

One of those is Russian ex-boxer Magomed Abdusalamov, who was paralyzed for life after suffering brain injuries in a 10-round fight in 2013.

Despite an ambulance being available after the fight, ringside doctors chose not to send him to hospital, and he eventually went by taxi. He was later found to have suffered life-altering brain damage.

His attorney, Paul Edelstein, has proposed legislation to improve safety regulations for boxers in the hopes of preventing any more tragic cases such as his. If enacted, “Mago’s law’ would lower the threshold for requiring fighters to be sent to hospital.

Chaninat & Leeds’ accident lawyers in Thailand help victims to claim damages.

This isn’t the only law being proposed to benefit fighters. Boxing Scene has also reported that Conor McGregor is set to speak at the United States Congress in a campaign to extend the ‘Ali Act’ to MMA.

The Muhammad Ali boxing Reform Act, which was enacted in 2000, offers boxers protection from ‘coercive contracts’ and bans promoters from exploiting fighters for “direct or indirect” financial gain.
