According to the New York Times, one of Cambridge University’s female-only colleges has announced that it will now accept applications from transgender women.
Murray Edwards College is one of 31 colleges associated with Cambridge, which is one of the world’s most prestigious universities. The college’s president, Barbara Stocking, explained the decision in a statement. “We are a college that is open to all outstanding young women, and so it is absolutely right, both legally and within our set of values, for anyone who identifies as female to be able to apply to study with us”, she said.

The college will now accept applications from anyone who “identifies as female and, where they have been identified as male at birth, has taken steps to live in the female gender.”
Feminist writer and activist Germaine Greer criticized the decision, calling it “ridiculous”. “The only sane thing for them to do is to cease discriminating on the basis of assigned gender of any kind”, she said.
