Interview with the First Female Monk in Thailand

by Admin on December 22, 2017

ThaiLawForum sat down with Venerable Dhammananda Bikkhuni and discussed females in Bhuddism in Thailand. Ven. Dhammananda explains how Thailand’s version of Bhuddism is a patriarchal system that prohibits females from becoming ordained as monks.

Seventeen years ago Ven. Dhammananda after completing her 2 years as a nun, went over to Sri Lanka to become ordained as a female monk, she then returned to Thailand, set up her own monastery and ordained other women who wished to become monks. Today, there are more than 200 ordained female monks in Thailand.

Ven. Dhammananda and monks like her still face opposition and oppression from other male dominated monasteries and even the government who refuse to recognize female monks, which means they rely on donations for support.

Watch the interview for more of her story here.
