The FDA bans antibacterial soaps in the U.S over reports that it does “more harm than good”
Earlier this month the Food and Drug Administration announced that all antibacterial soaps will be banned from the U.S market.
According to The Guardian, this ruling came after the manufacturers were unable to produce conclusive evidence that the cleansers were effective and safe to use.
The new federal rule bans any soap or antiseptic product that has one or more of 19 chemical compounds such as triclocarbon, often found in bar soaps, and triclosan, often found in liquid soaps. It does not apply to alcohol-based hand sanitizers and wipes which are currently under investigation by the FDA.The FDA has given manufacturers a year to change their products or pull them off shelves.

This ruling was welcomed by health experts from around the world. Ramon Shaban, president of the Australasian College for Infection Prevention and Control, said “We must consider every measure to slow the rate of antimicrobial resistance.
“Reducing the unnecessary use of such agents, in this case in products that are not used in clinical settings, is an important aspect of our collective efforts.”
