Experts Pushing Thai Government to Pass Medical Cannabis and Kratom Law

Medical experts and academics are joining forces in urging the Thai government to quickly pass legislation that would legalize both marijuana and kratom for medicinal purposes.

In total, 14 groups of drug researchers and doctors petitioned the ruling military government to speed up legislation that would amend the Narcotics Act and allow for the research and clinical use of weed and kratom.

As it stands now, both kratom and marijuana are Category V drugs under the Narcotics Act, which makes them illegal to consume under all circumstances, medical or otherwise.

They also emphasized to the junta how far Thailand is lagging behind other countries in terms of research in kratom and pot as medicine, pointing out that the US Food and Drug Administration has already approved of three cannabis-based drugs to combat a variety of afflictions.

Criminal defense lawyers handling drug cases in Thailand remain skeptical that a medical exception to Thailand’s strict drug laws will have a big impact on people arrested for kratom or marijuana in the country.

In past months, it look as if legal medical marijuana in Thailand was a certainty but recently the move has hit some major roadblocks and its chances of being codified could dwindle completely for the moment if it’s not passed before national elections take place, which the junta claims will happen early next year.
