Following the European Commission’s partnership with Facebook to suppress “hate speech” and to promote counter narratives in May of this year, Breitbart reports that the EU commissioner also added censorship of ‘fake news” to the list.
According to Breitbart, “The unelected executive arm of the European Union (EU) is threatening to escalate from “non-legislative” action if Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube do not censor what it considers “illegal” online speech within 24 hours.”
In his statement, the commissioner said that the commitments made by IT companies promised that majority of hate speech would be reviewed in under 24 hours. However, a report by the European Commission suggests that censorship has only been taking place in France and Germany and so far, they seem to be taking too long.

EU Justice Commissioner Věra Jourová told The Financial Times (FT) “The last weeks and months have shown that social media companies need to live up to their important role and take up their share of responsibility when it comes to phenomena like online radicalization, illegal hate speech or fake news.”
The move has been criticized by free speech activists who say that the term “hate speech” has been defined too loosely and will target free speech in general and “fake news” will mean censorship of alternative news websites.
