Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte says he will declare martial law in the country if the drug problems continue to persist reports Al Jazeera.
“I have to protect the Filipino people. It is my duty. And I tell you now, if I have to declare martial law, I will declare it,” Duterte told a gathering of businessmen according to the report.
He continued saying, “I don’t care about the Supreme Court. No one can stop me,” he said. “The right to preserve one’s life and my nation … transcends everything else, even the limitations.”
Under the current law, a President is able to declare martial law only “in case of invasion or rebellion”. Nowhere does it state that a President can impose martial law for drug violence.

Judicial bodies such as the Congress and the Supreme Court can review any such declaration. However, Duterte said that it is his duty “to preserve the Filipino people, and the youth of this land” and he does not care about the Supreme Court. He added, “The right to preserve one’s life and my nation … transcends everything else, even the limitations.”
The announcement is in contradiction to his earlier statement in which he claimed he had no plans to declare martial law, saying the idea was “nonsense” and that it had never helped to improve the lives of citizens when it was declared in the past.
