Divorce has been a global phenomenon that has become as common as getting married and now it is hitting Baby Boomers the hardest. According to a study by Bowling Green State University, divorce rates among couples over 50 have doubled in the last 20 years. In 1990, fewer than one in 10 people who divorced were 50 or older. In 2009, that figure was one in four.
The study’s co-author Susan L. Brown said part of this is due to high expectations in a marriage and that people are looking for self-fulfillment and individual happiness.
“When you are 60, 65, you retire,” said Susan. “[You think], ‘Well, I can live another 20, 25 years. Do I want to spend the rest of my life with that person? Is she or he making me happy?”
Even though there are no statistics available for the divorce rate of Thailand’s Baby Boomers, the number of Thailand divorces have increased overall. According to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Social Development and Human Security, Paiboon Wattanasiritham Thailand’s divorce rate increased from 10 per cent in 1994 to 26 per cent in 2006.
