Minister proposes to remove doors from all dorms

An Indonesian minister has garnered nationwide attention when she proposed the removal of all doors from dormitories in order to prevent students from engaging in “free-sex” and homosexuality reports Asian Correspondent.

Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa added, according to Indonesia’s Antara News, “Not only men and women who are doing it [sex]. The thing that is equally dangerous is men with men and women with women.”

The proposal has drawn criticism from students and rights’ groups with some saying it is a privacy violation and others fearing security issues.

When the minister was asked about matters of privacy, she said, “A dormitory is either all-boy or all-girl. What privacy [do you need]?”

An engineering student was quoted by Jakarta Post as saying, “It’s over the top because we’re not thinking of immoral behavior, but more about security.”

Human rights activist Bonar Tigor Naipopos said that government should not take up matters that stem from religious beliefs. Sexual activity outside of marriage is considered a sin in Islam, which is the most widely followed religion in Indonesia.

The rising conservatism in Indonesia is mainly due to the heavy influence of Islamic law in their courts, Recent reports indicate that casual sex as well as gay sex will soon be criminalized in the country. Another instance saw a woman being caned 13 times for standing too close to her boyfriend.
