For the first time, the Supreme Court of Virginia has acknowledged same-sex couples and has made changes to alimony law in the state.
Now, Virginian divorce law states a person can cease alimony payments to their former spouse if they have cohabited with a new partner for a year.

The case was prompted by the divorce of Michael Luttrell and Samantha Cucco. Luttrell had agreed to pay alimony for eight years, but requested to end his payments in 2014 when Cucco became engaged to a new partner.
The new relationship was same-sex, which Cucco argued did not qualify as cohabitation.
