Unusual Grounds for Divorce
A 52-year old Taiwanese woman was granted a divorce from her husband on the grounds that — get this — his penis was too small. The woman was displeased with his length (five centimeters) which she wasn’t aware of until their wedding night.
The newlyweds separated the following day. The woman said her husband was “impotent and unable to fulfill his responsibility as a husband.”
“We quarreled the whole night and I asked him to seek treatment,” she said. The couple attempted to have sex several times, with no success.
Grounds for divorce in Thailand have ranged from the typical foreigner-Thai relationship problems, to more unusual cases. According to Thailand divorce lawyers, if one spouse does not consent to a divorce then a divorce ‘for cause’ must be filed. In Thailand the spouse filing for the divorce must assert grounds for divorce and make a personal appearance in court.
Islamic Law Allows Facebook Divorces?
If you thought the above was an atypical divorce case, FrontPageMag.com is reporting that a husband was able to divorce his wife via Facebook, and the divorce holds in Islamic law.
“He wrote ‘Talaaq’, three times on his wife’s Facebook wall. The man also obtained a fatwa in favor of his action,” the report states. The woman has filed a police complaint in response.
Islamic law requires a husband tells his wife “Talaaq” three times to divorce. In the past, Muslim men have divorced their wives via text message, and Islamic law considered the divorces valid.
While Islamic law is used in Southern provinces in Thailand, no case has arisen where divorcing via Facebook or text message could be considered valid.
