Men More Likely to Drink after Divorce

A study presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association states that men are more likely than women to turn to drinking after divorce. As a whole, married men appear to drink less than their single and divorced counterparts.

The study also suggests that married women drink more than their divorced or widowed friends-partly because they lived with men who had higher levels of alcohol use.

The research indicates that men consistently drink more than women and are more prone to develop an alcohol problem.

Divorce Too Expensive for Poor Couples

Research has shown that for poor couples long-term separations are an alternative for divorce. This was especially true when children are involved.

The study found that married but indefintley separated couples generally had only a high school education, were black or Hispanic, and had young children.

Today, as laws around “no-fault” divorces have become more lenient, researchers from the study suggested long-term separations are mostly done to avoid the financial stress of going through a divorce.

Financial reasons such as shared real estate, retirement savings, and health care coverage appeared to be the primary motivation for staying married by living apart.

According to divorce lawyers in Thailand many spouses seeking divorce in Thailand do not qualify for a consensual divorce and therefore may have to wait for a statutory separation period of three years to run its course.
