The Knowing Buddha Organization, a new Bangkok-based group, is calling for an international boycott against Disney’s dog “Buddha.”
The dog, who stars in a series of movies, avoids meat and stress, and partakes in meditation and yoga.
“Buddha” in part of the “Buddies” series about a group of dogs that is geared toward children.
The organization feels this is offensive and is demanding an end to the commercialization of Buddha in Thailand and worldwide. Last month the group marched down Khao San Road with the slogan “Stop Disrespecting Buddha.” About 200 protestors stated they would not tolerate the image of Buddha being used in any way except in a respectful manner.
The focus of the protest was on a large poster featuring “Buddha” the dog with the words “BUDDHA” “Stop!! How could we let this happen?!”
The group has also made a list of “disrespectful businesses” that have used Buddha in the company’s name. While the list included different countries the organization said the US has had the most disrespect for Buddha.
From restaurants to key chains, the spiritual leader’s image has become a trademark for the commercial industry-one that the Knowing Buddha Organization is determined to change.
