An unusual disability case in Toulouse, France has seen a court award a disability grant to a woman who suffers from an allergy to electromagnetic radiation, found in everyday items such as cell phones.

According to Yahoo News, Marine Richard, 39, suffers from a debilitating condition known as Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS). The condition is not recognized in most countries, including France. Richards described the ruling as a “breakthrough” for those affected with the disorder.

Sufferers report symptoms such as headaches, tingling, fatigue and nausea, in levels ranging from mild discomfort to life-ruining disability, when exposed to mobile phones, wifi signals, televisions and other gadgets.

Thai labor lawyers Chaninat and Leeds have decades of experience in handling employment law cases in Thailand and abroad.

Richard, a former radio documentary producer, now lives life as a recluse, in a barn in the mountains without electricity or running water.

Last month, a court in Toulouse ruled that Richard can claim a disability allowance of 800 Euros ($912) per month.

The ruling does not accept EHS as an illness, but agreed that her symptoms did not allow Richard to work.

Richard’s lawyer, Alice Terrasse said the ruling could provide a model for “thousands of people” to gain similar allowances.

Sweden and Germany have classified EHS as an occupational disease, but most countries do not recognize it. The World Health Organization lists it as a condition but states there is “no scientific basis” to link to symptoms to exposure to electromagnetic radiation.
