A list of all the strange laws that went into effect this year
It was reported here last year that in its fight against global warming and greenhouse gas emissions, California passed a law that requires the state to regulate cow farts. According to ZeroHedge, “Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a bill (SB 1383) that requires the state to cut methane emissions from dairy cows and other animals by 40% by 2030.”
The law was met with both surprise and amusement but most importantly, it showed California’s readiness to combat pollution despite the state’s own Air Resources Board acknowledging “that there’s no known way to achieve this reduction.”
Several other laws that went into effect January 1st raised a few eyebrows. One such law was California’s wine law that made it legal for barbers and beauticians to serve alcohol in their salons provided the alcohol is free.
California did not stop there. It soon passed another law that bars state employees from being reimbursed for out-of-state travel to states that still have gender discriminatory laws(such as North Carolina).
In New England, cider brewers in Maine can now increase their alcohol content from 7% to 8.5% while Colorado grocery stores will be able to sell wine, beer and liquor. 2017 is to be a good year for beer lovers in Pennsylvania as it just recently made it legal for beer distributors to sell six-packs for the first time.
A New Hampshire law criminalizing pointing lasers at automobiles and airplanes also went into effect this year.
Finally, there’s legalization of recreational marijuana. Although this may not necessarily seem like a crazy law, it would have had heads rolling 10 years ago. Las Vegas has officially made possession of marijuana legal while residents of North Dakota, Florida, Arkansas and Montana will have medical marijuana readily available.
Marijuana legalization measures have already been passed and implemented in California, Massachusetts and Maine.
