Conversion therapy is an attempt to change sexual orientation and gender identity of individuals

Connecticut lawmakers voted to pass a law that would illegalize conversion therapy, a highly discredited method which is used to try to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
The bill was signed by Gov. D.P. Malloy in his Capitol office in the presence of legislative leaders and LGBT advocates.
“This is supported by the science,” Malloy said according to Connecticut Post. “This is supported by our cultural awakening and awareness that we are a society of very different players, of different folks, and we shouldn’t try to make people just like us and should recognize that some people are simply not us. But that doesn’t make them bad, and it certainly doesn’t make them mentally ill. And it certainly should not subject anyone to therapies that don’t work and aren’t supported by science.”

The law is aimed at protecting teens by prohibiting licensed professional therapists from practicing the coercive therapy tactics, which include electro-shock therapy from anyone under 18. The law does not, however, ban adults from making use of the tactics and also allows religious leaders to offer guidance.
