The amendment to the Congressional Accountability Act of 1995 Reform Act will be the first of its kind since passing the bill in 1995. There has yet to be a date marked on the calendar for the Committee, however the bill has been introduced to the Committee on Ethics, House of Oversight and Government Reform, Ways and Means.
The Bill reform will prohibit Members of Congress from paying settlements in sexual harassment cases with taxpayers’ money. The Bill will require Members of Congress to reimburse the US Treasury within 90 days of the settlement. If the Member of Congress refuses to pay the compensation it will be garnished from their salary.
The Bill will also create a legal office for complaints against Members of congress in regards to these types of matters. The reformed legislation will allow for both parties to go through the complaint process on equal steps and remove the need for mediation and counseling. It will no longer require the victim to sign a non disclosure agreement or remove the Member of Congress from their job position but instead strongly recommend they take paid leave.
