College Students Do Not Speak Freely For Fear of Being Offensive

A survey has revealed that the majority of university students do not feel they have the right to freely express their views, writes Activist Post.

Numerous incidents have seen an attack on free speech and a lack of respect for the press on campuses.

The incident at the University of Missouri last November highlighted this issue, when students pushed and shoved reporters and cameramen to prevent them covering their protest.

Students chanted “No Comment” and “No Media, Safe Space.”

In the US, the First Amendment cites freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

The survey showed that a large majority of students believed that schools should be able to restrict offensive language. This raises questions regarding whether hate speech can be restricted whilst also protecting free speech.

Harvard student Rachel Heubner told Fox News (below) that:

“many students come to college wanting to be exposed to a diverse group of people, to a variety of viewpoints, but the opposite is occurring. Open discourse is stifled — there is a lack of freedom of expression from students, from administrators…”
