The Guardian reports on Tracey Morgan, the Sports Minister for the UK announcing the change in law making it illegal for coaches to have sex with their 16-17 year old students.
Recent light has been shed on a football sex scandal that has led to similar allegations in archery and canoeing. These scandals between coaches and their underage students have pushed parliament to place the same legal structures in the sports sector as other sectors of underage care such as schooling and after school activities.
Parents involved in child custody disputes in Thailand often accuse the opposite parent of sexual abuse. Saving clear evidence of crimes is therefore very important.
Anne Tiivas, head of the NSPCC child protection sport unit, explains that some sport coaches with mal intentions spend years grooming their students for sex. It was the NSPCC that pressed for the loophole in the underage sports sector to be shut down.
