Chinese New Year Festival in Bangkok’s Chinatown

by Admin on February 8, 2013

Since the Chinese New Year isn’t an official Thai public holiday (and falls on a Monday this year), many will have to spend the day at work.

Fortunately, New Year’s Eve is on a Sunday, and there’s lots happening in and around Bangkok’s Chinatown this weekend to celebrate the year of the Snake.

Here’s where to head to ring in the lunar new year:

Chinatown’s New Year Festival

Where: As close to Yaowarat Road as you can get.

When: February 10, 2013 (beginning at 5pm) through February 11, 2013

What: Expect cultural performances in the street, lion and dragon dances, Chinese opera and Thais and Chinese clothed in red.

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will be presiding over the opening ceremony, which starts at 5pm. A special exhibition also will be held to display His Majesty the King’s philosophy and the history of the Bangkok’s Chinatown.

Tibetan cultural artists will also be performing on Yaowarat Road for the Festival.

While the street is filled with vendors selling both Thai and Chinese food (and a fusion of them both!) year round, expect the best eats to be out this weekend.
