Christians have been seen protesting, weeping and praying outside churches, with some re-erecting crosses in defiance after they have been taken down.

Bishop Zhu Weifang, wrote a letter condemning the campaign as unlawful. He said:

“The more (authorities) suppress the call for justice, the more it shows they are faced with severe social crisis, that they have little confidence in their ability to rule, and that they are incompetent in dealing with issues.”

The campaign is thought to be the wish of President and Communist Party leader Xi Jinping, in a crackdown mean to remove any obstacles to the party’s rule.

However, expert on China’s religions Yang Fenggang, said the party could ironically be heading towards the instability it is trying to avoid. He said:

“The crackdown has alienated the Christians in China, who are otherwise law-abiding citizens.”

Officially speaking, China is an atheist country, but according to the constitution it guarantees religious freedom.
