From this week forward, anyone in West Virginia aged 21 and older can carry a concealed handgun without a permit and without any training.
Law enforcement officials have expressed concerns regarding the law, especially how an individual can carry a gun without safety training.
Huntington Police Chief Joe Ciccarelli believes his departments ability to fight crime will be impaired. He said:
“Not being able to use that as a tool to put those people in jail when they need to be is going to harm our law enforcement efforts and our drug enforcement efforts, quite frankly.”
Gun enthusiasts, however, praise the law. Sebastian Paseley, owner of Herd Tactical gun store, said:
“The folks that are going to do it do have a mindset of it’s kind of a responsibility […] and it’s not going to be the wild west. People do take it seriously.”

Meanwhile in Washington, two judges have conflicting views regarding the enforcement of a portion of the city’s gun law.
Federal judge Richard J Leon feels that the Washington DC requirement that people who wish to carry a gun must show “proper reason” and “good reason to fear injury.” He argues this does not fit with citizens second amendment rights to bear arms.
In contrast, fellow US district court judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly sided with the city, arguing that the gun laws are reasonable.
The matter will need to be viewed by a higher court.
