Change in Italian Law Sees Divorce Rate Surge Amongst Elderly

by Admin on August 27, 2015

Divorce rates among senior citizens in Italy have dramatically increased, following an Italian law change decreasing the length of divorce procedure times, according to Italian news channel the Local.

Previously, an uncontested divorce procedure took three years, but following a move in April from the Italian government, is now six months.

Couples over the age of 65, including those into their 90’s are choosing to go their separate ways in surprising amounts.

The Italian Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AMI) show figures that the over 65 group are at 20 percent – a record high. The same category was 13 percent in 2010.

Divorce lawyers in Thailand Chaninat and Leeds have decades of experience handling divorce cases, both between Thai nationals and foreigners.

President of the AMI, Gian Ettore Gassani said:

“Italians are changing dramatically; I don’t believe any other country has seen the changes we have seen in the last 20 years.

“Today there are cases that never existed before, people even over 80 who are asking for a divorce so they can start a new life.”

In the first half of 2014 there were 50,000 separations and divorce requests. But following the approval of the new law this number has now doubled.

Lawyers are now expecting to see a greater surge in September and October. Gassani explains:

“Couples come back from vacation where they have spent more time together and have fought and then they want to say goodbye […] The same thing happens in January after Christmas.”

The majority of divorce cases are still coming from the 44 – 54 age bracket.
