Canada is currently working on a law that would legalize marijuana for all purposes including recreational, and in doing so may violate an international treaty that bans legalizing marijuana.

According to Vox, “The bill will set the minimum age for purchasing marijuana at 18, although provinces could raise the age within their borders. The federal government will handle licensing producers, while provincial governments will manage distribution and retail sales. And Canadians will be allowed to grow up to four marijuana plants per household and possess up to 30 grams per person.”

Should the bill pass, Canada will join Uruguay in being the only countries around the world that have legalized marijuana. However, Canada is part of an international treaty that bans the legalization of the drug which will mean that Canada will be in violation of the law.

The bill has sparked mixed reactions from the public. Supporters are of the opinion that the bill will mitigate the black market for cannabis and reduce marijuana related offences while critics fear that the legalization will make pot more accessible to youths and drug addicts thereby creating a bigger problem than the one it’s solving.
