Skilled individuals to get their visas in less than two weeks
The Canadian government is helping technology companies hire international talent by shortening its visa process to as little as two weeks instead of the one year it currently takes.
The global skills visa program is part of the country’s Global Skills Strategy, an initiative meant to increase Canada’s competitiveness in the global technology market.
“What companies have told us is that, if it’s a really long process, they lose that opportunity to hire that individual,” federal Labour Minister Patty Hajdu told The Globe and Mail.
Vancouver tech firm Unbounce expressed the same sentiment. “There have been several occasions at Unbounce in which we’ve interviewed skilled engineers eager to move to Canada and work for our team, only to wait six months or longer with no sign of a visa,” said Sascha Williams, the company’s chief operating officer.
By making it easier for skilled individuals to enter the country, the Canadian government hopes to boost their economy and expand their technology sector.
This is in direct contrast to the U.S, whose H-1B visa program is flailing following the recent crackdown on immigration and tightening of U.S immigration laws.
