Cambodian officials recently jailed 13 women after they tried to rebuild their homes that had been demolished to make way for a private development in Phnom Penh’s Boueng Kak Lake area.

According to Fox News, the government had awarded the land to a Chinese company to develop a hotel, office buildings, and luxury houses.

The Housing Rights Task Force said four of the women began a hunger strike on Sunday to demand their immediate release.

According to various news reports, in Cambodia land titles have become an unclear issue since land ownership was abolished during the genocidal rule of the Khmer Rouge and many legal documents were lost.

As Cambodia deals with this conflicting land issue, Thailand has continued to see a growth in development without any of the drama.
In contrast to Cambodia, Thailand’s real estate law is relatively secure.

Althouhg there have been problems with falsified title deeds and encroachment of national park land, persons may acquire simple land rights that are secure. This is however a prohibition on non-Thais owning land except in very limited circumstances.
