The World Justice Project released the 2017-2018 Rule of Law Index, where countries are ranked on factors such as human rights, access to criminal justice and government powers. Cambodia ranked second last whilst Venezuela ranked worst.
Although, no country has achieved a perfect score, Cambodia ranks at the bottom due to government corruption and the recent dissolution of the opposition party’s leader and media and censorship. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice in Cambodia commented on their ranking that they “don’t care” as their human rights have not declined.
The Rule of Index publication hopes to set a benchmark, initiate programs and deepen the appreciation for law.
