Lawnewz reports all single stall restrooms in Californian businesses, restaurants and areas of public accommodation will have to be made gender neutral starting on March 1st 2017 according to a bill passed on Thursday.

Assembly Bill (AB) 1732 was signed by California Governor Jerry Brown and authored by state assemblyman Phil Ting.

In a statement, Ting said “California is charting a new course for equality.” He added, “Restricting access to single-user restrooms by gender defies common sense and disproportionately burdens the LGBT community, women, and parents or caretakers of dependents of the opposite gender.  Bathroom access is a biological need.  This law will ensure more safety, fairness, and convenience access for everyone.”

According to a press release by Phil Ting, this law is in sharp contrast to 19 other states that are considering actually restricting access to public restrooms based on biological sex.

Countries all over the world are broadening their stance on transgender rights with few even introducing transgender bathrooms. It was reported that the one of the first ever transgender bathrooms was found in a school in the northeast of Thailand, a country well known for its acceptance of transgender men and women.
