California Pet Law Means Stores Must Only Sell Rescue Animals

by Admin on October 18, 2017

New legislation in California means pet stores can no longer sell animals from breeders, Fox News reports.

Bill A.B 485, which Governor Jerry Brown signed into law last week, states that pet stores are required to sell only animals that have been sourced from rescue centers and shelters. This means that animals from ‘puppy mills’ and ‘kitten factories’, which are known for over breeding, abuse and squalid conditions, can’t be sold.

Animal rights activists have praised the decision. Elena Bicker, executive director at Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation, said it’s “a great law” because it “elevates shelter pets as a place in homes”.
