California Legalizes Third Gender

California has become the first state to legally recognize a third gender, according to Mashable.

On Sunday, Governor Jerry Brown signed The Gender Recognition Act (Senate Bill 179) into legislation, which allows residents to register their genders as male, female, or non-binary on birth certificates and driver’s licenses

The bill states that “the binary gender designations of female and male fail to adequately represent the diversity of human experience”. It enables transgender individuals to legally change their gender more easily, and those who identify as ‘non-binary’ to be legally recognized as such.
