57 year old becomes the first inmate to receive gender reassignment surgery
57 year old California inmate Shiloh Heavenly Quine became the first inmate to receive state funded gender reassignment surgery reports The Chicago Tribune.
Quine, who was convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping and robbery for ransom is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Prison officials agreed to the sex change in August of 2015.
Although the case is a landmark victory for the transgender community, victims of Quine’s crimes have expressed bitter disappointment in the ruling.

Farida Baig, daughter of the man Quine shot and killed said to the Tribune, “It just made me dizzy and sick. I’m helping pay for his surgery; I live in California. It’s kind of like a slap in the face.”
Baig tried to block the surgery through courts but lost in the ruling.
