California Enacts ‘Ban the Box’ Law

According to LA Weekly, a new law has been passed in California to prohibit employers from questioning job applicants about their criminal history.

The new legislation, dubbed ‘Ban the Box’, prevents employers from putting questions on initial job applications regarding previous convictions. Governor Jerry Brown signed it into law on October 14th, and it will become effective on January 1st 2018.

The bill was written to provide better employment opportunities for people with criminal histories in order to stop the cycle of reoffending. Assemblyman Kevin McCarty of Sacramento said that it will “eliminate barriers to employment, reduce recidivism and give people with conviction histories an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to become productive, contributing members of our society.”
