California passed a new law that makes it possible for felons at county jails to vote in the upcoming elections reports LA Times.

Bill AB 2466 was introduced by Assemblywoman Shirley Weber who believes that the bill will give prisoners a sense of belonging and help re-introduce them to society

Weber said “Civic participation can be a critical component of re-entry and has been linked to reduced recidivism.”

The bill has received criticism from certain lawmakers and police officials. Senator Patricia Bates said that the ruling was disappointing and that allowing felons to vote will undermine the integrity of the elections.

California Police Chiefs Association chimed in by saying that the law mistakenly restores a right that is lost when people commit crimes.

“We believe that there have to be consequences to your action, and the consequences of being a convicted felon are that you can’t vote and you can’t possess firearms,” said Donny Youngblood, president of the California State Sheriffs’ Association.
