Brunei, the tiny Asian nation on the island of Borneo, has introduced a host of barbaric new Sharia laws that have drawn outrage from rights groups around the world.
Among the most disturbing parts of Brunei’s recently codified Sharia Penal Code are stoning to death for gays, amputations for theft, and lesser criminal punishments for sex out of wedlock and not praying on Fridays.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, who runs the Southeast Asian country as an unelected monarch also made these draconian new punishments applicable to children.
In Southeast Asia, it’s not uncommon for Sharia laws to be used as a means to distribute justice.
For example, in Thailand, Sharia law can be used in the southern, majority-Muslim regions as an alternative to traditional courts, especially when it comes to Thailand family law.
