British MPs Call for Prostitution to be Decriminalized

by Admin on November 20, 2017

According to The Mirror, a study by British MPs shows that there are 70,000 sex workers in Britain, making an average of £2,000 (87,000 baht) per week.

The study, carried out by the Home Affairs Select Committee last year, found that sex workers have an average of 25 clients per week, who pay £78 (3,300 baht) for their services.

Kieth Vaz, chairman of the committee, said that the report symbolizes the first time in decades that Parliament had considered the issue of prostitution, calling it “a polarizing subject with strong views on all sides”. He added that there was a “universal agreement” that elements of current prostitution laws are “unsatisfactory”.

Under UK law, the buying and selling of sex is not illegal. However, soliciting for sex is punishable by law, as is running a brothel.

The report argues that both prostitution and soliciting should be decriminalized, and that sex workers should be allowed to work together in brothels without fear facing arrest, violence or abuse.

Sex workers in Hong Kong echoed this idea, stating that forcing sex workers to work in isolation poses a number of risks. In Thailand, sex workers have also been campaigning for legalization and Thai labor laws to protect them.
