Cryptocurrency critics have new ammunition for their argument after researchers in Germany found that the ledger system that is the base of Bitcoin consists of hundreds of links to child pornography. They found that out of the 1,600 files they investigated at the time; 274 had links to child abuse, 142 linked to the dark web, 8 had sexual content and one of the images had sexual content of an underage person.
The researchers concluded that the content that blockchain can store such as “illegal pornography” can make the possession of blockchain technology illegal. They add that over 100 countries prohibit the possession and distribution of child pornography.
Under law in many countries, it would be users who are downloading and storing content which means, they would be liable for illegal content added to their blockchain by others due to the decentralized nature of Bitcoin.
