Blasphemy Laws ‘Astonishingly Widespread’ Worldwide

According to Info Wars, blasphemy laws still exist in 71 countries around the world.

Laws against blasphemy may sound archaic, but they are much more prevalent than most would believe. A report by the U.S. Commission on International Rights Freedom showed that Iran, Pakistan, Egypt, Italy and Greece are just some of the countries where people can be prosecuted for blasphemy.

Iran and Pakistan have the harshest penalties. Those who commit blasphemy there can be sentenced to death.

Lese Majeste Laws in Thailand

Thailand is known for its harsh penalties for lese majeste, which is the law against insulting the monarchy.

Based on Thai Criminal Code Section 112, lese majeste makes it illegal to defame, insult or threaten the king, queen or their heirs.  The law was introduced in 1908, but has since been toughened.

Most recently, people have been prosecuted as a result of their actions on social media. Earlier this year, a man received a 35-year prison sentence for committing lese majeste via Facebook posts. Last month, a man was given a 2.5-year sentence for simply sharing a post.
